Our approach

What to expect

We provide a tailored talk therapy for each person we work with that is designed uniquely for you, known as an integrative approach. To help us do this we are guided by various clinical evidence-based models of therapy that allows us to tailor your treatment for you. Clinical & Counselling Psychology can offer an integrated approach which can include working in a client-centred way holding humanistic values and integrate various skills and techniques from a range of psychotherapies including: Cognitive-Behavioural-Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused-Therapy (CFT), Dialectical-Behavioural-Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Schema therapy, mindfulness, and person centred/experiential. Whatever the approach that works for you it is always delivered in a safe, respectful, and supportive way that aims to empower you.

The initial session is focused on assessment, where the client and therapist both have the opportunity to get to know each other. The initial assessment allows you the space to share what is difficult for you in your life at this time, and for us to understand how we can best help you going forward. The initial assessment will explore your, the potential origins of your distress, what triggered your distress, what is maintaining your distress, how you are currently managing with your distress, and what your strengths are. From this exploration, We will offer you a psychological understanding (formulation), that will guide your treatment plan.

After the assessment stage, we will agree on goals for how to best make change for you in your life. These goals will also guide your individualised and unique treatment plan. Goals for change may be clear for you when you arrive to therapy, or they may not be. We can help you with setting these after the initial assessment. Sometimes goals can be short term, medium term, or long term, and whatever we work on will depend on what you want to change in your life.

All therapy sessions are offered via video call, online via the internet using Zoom. If this is unfamiliar, just ask when you are making your booking. To use video conferencing you will need access to a video camera, that can be found on your smart phone, computer, or tablet such as an iPad etc.
